The wonderful libertarian defender of the free market and critic of wasting taxpayers money, Paul Delaire Staines AKA Guido Fawkes, lived the life of a freeloading student. At least that’s according to this article from Hull University’s newspaper in the mid-eighties, obtained from our sources up North.
While the taxpayer was providing for Mr Delaire Staines to experience scholarly pursuits in true, Young Ones fashion, he forgot to pass his exams. When he was supporting the Contras, poor Paul was obviously not going to lectures. When he was organising for the Federation of Conservative Students, he wasn’t doing his homework. Heaven knows what he was getting up to in 1986 but it wasn’t revision.
I like the bit that the ‘sit-in’ arranged by the Tory students was in a room they’d booked for the purpose. Very radical.
I think the crowning glory of the article has to go to the last quote:
“Only someone with an incredibly high opinion of themselves would take this kind of action and make their own failure the object of such publicity. Mind you, during his one year with us he was always good for a laugh.”
Well, nothing changes does it?
This of course does pose the question for the man who is the first to point out waste and undue uses of taxpayers money. Just how much did this little bit of freeloading cost the tax-payer, and did Paul Delaire Staine AKA Guido Fawkes feel compelled to pay back the money his obviously wasted education cost the hard working families of Thatcher’s Britain? I think we should be told.

I am indeed waiting for the letter from his lawyer. Got to love those principled free speech libertarians.
Who cares? It was a couple of decades ago! I’m no Guido fan tbh, I have only a passing interest in his site but this whole vendetta strikes me as completely insane!
I don’t think anyone would really care to be judged on what they did as a 20 year old student, I certainly wouldn’t, would you?!
If you don’t like what he does, far enough, but this muck-raking and insinuation is childish and pointless.
Step away from the PC and get some perspective!
Another reason to knock this anonymongrel astro-turfing on the head… it’s currently near-impossible to correctly identify sarcasm and satire!
I’m tempted to use profanity but will resist in relation to “mentalmonkey’s” comment. Not that I wish t be abusive to someone who has taken their time to pen a comment even if it disagrees with me but because of this.
This particular person posted their comment but it got caught up in my automated spam filters. They then e-mailed me to ask why their comment had not been posted.
I duly responded explaining the situation and allowed the post to go up on my site with the intention of giving it my full attention with a considered reply.
Here’s my e-mail:

Many apologies for the delay, contrary to popular belief I don’t spend
my life in front of my PC and have a myriad of other things to get
done. Just to let you know I have a rather complex automatic filtering
system on my site that comprises three stages two amended versions of available systems out there and one personal and customized system of my own. It has pretty much stopped all spam getting through allowing the vast majority of commentators to post direct to my site without the need for manual moderation.
Sadly it appears your comment did get caught by the third (my
personalised system), will have a look as to the reason why but I
honestly am not sure as I can’t see a reason unless it’s your e-mail
address (had some problems with pornographic spam comments) so possibly the presence of the word ‘cock’ in your address flagged it up.
Anyway, I’ve OK’d your comment now. and it’s up on the site.
With best wishes,
PP
I think that’s a rather pleasant response but sadly mentalmonkey didn’t get it as, surprise surprise their e-mail address was invalid. So instead of my considered response to his/her comments I will simply say bugger off.
If you wish me to treat your views with respect, at least treat my site with the respect of not entering false details.
Oh, hang on a second, that’s part of what all this argument is about isn’t it? Point proved I think. Thanks for the IP traceroute though.
A pedant writes: Humberside College was unconnected to Hull University. It later became the University of Humberside, and is now called the University of Lincoln.
Quite probably true Forest Pines I have no sodding idea whatsoever. BTW, like your website, very nice.
Thank you!
Yes Andy, I was aware of the article being privy to it before it went up on various sites and subsequently had to be taken down following the threats of legal action from the oh so libertarian free speech advocate Paul Delaire Staines AKA Guido Fawkes.
Looks like he better start penning a few more threatening e-mails, just to prove what a pathetic hypocrite he is of course.
