I rarely swear on my blog but….
This is for the miserable little Prick from Prague in the Czech Republic who yesterday had a bash at trying to crack my site. Yes I do know who you are so piss off and don’t come back.

Dominic can’t help it – he’s European after all!
Mrs Penguin responded on 05 Oct 2007 at 8:56 pm #
And what has being European got to do with being the kind of person who would be dishonest enough to try and hack a website?
Political Penguin responded on 05 Oct 2007 at 9:49 pm #
Don’t be presumptuous Dave.
David Hartley responded on 08 Oct 2007 at 3:44 pm #
I speak as a european myself of course!
Political Penguin responded on 09 Oct 2007 at 11:44 am #
Who you calling yourself European Dave, you’re half Canadian. Bloody North American interlopers.

Its not hard to hack a shitty blog like this when you use free third party software to run it. You cheap fuck.
Matthew Revell responded on 10 Oct 2007 at 10:36 am #
Rory, chap, as I’ve said elsewhere on this site, I’m not sure of the value of trying to show you just why you’re wrong, but I’m waiting for the kettle boil, so…
Let me take your statement bit by bit.
“it’s not hard” – what in particular are you proposing? A SQL injection? This site will be hardened against that.
“hack” – hacking is writing code (well, the term is richer than that, but let’s keep it simple. Perhaps you’re talking about “cracking”.
“shitty” – I don’t agree with everything Gareth says but both the content and presentation of this site are of a high quality.
“blog” – true, Gareth uses this as a blog but the software itself isn’t strictly a blogging system. So, you may want to get a better idea of what the system’s running before you start thinking about how hard or otherwise it is to hack.
“free” – yes, it is free software, but not just free as in free of charge but it’s also free as in speech. Go find out about it, it’ll make your life better.
“third party” – I’m sure there must be a fascinating story to be told of how you write every bit of software you need from scratch.
“You cheap fuck” – ha, there you go. Gareth doesn’t seem cheap, from what I know of him, but let’s leave that aside. What’s interesting here is that you assume that using free software makes someone “cheap”. Free software is not cheap to produce, either monetarily or in terms of volunteer contributions and I know Gareth contributes back to the free software community. Do you send a donation to Google every time you do a web search? No? Perhaps that makes you cheap. Gareth’s use of free software does not make him cheap: it signals that he’s discerning over what software he uses.

Hi Matt, thanks for your much more discerning comment, they’re much more appreciated and you’re completely right about the difference between hacking and cracking.
A quick apology for the delay as you hit my moderation system. As I’m sure you know, people with a previous comment (assuming they enter the same e-mail address, name and have the same IP number) will go through automatically. Yours hit the buffers because you quoted Rory/RAW by using the word ‘fuck’. As I’m sure you know many bits of spam contain explicit and or sexually graphic language so the word ‘fuck’ is specifically on the ‘send for manual approval’ list.
Oh, and yes I’m around for the next hour or so before I have to do something decidedly less techie that takes me away from my computer so please no moaning about double-standards in quickly allowing through positive comments from certain quarters, I just happen to be here at the moment. If you’re in doubt Stephen Newton dropped a satirical comment about Dominic yesterday at 9.00pm and it didn’t get approved till well into the early hours at the same time as Rory/RAW’s little contribution to the thread.

I should probably add a further comment that your post was perhaps a tad mischievous. Surely many people reading this would assume you meant Dom/Prague wouldn’t they?
Political Penguin responded on 13 Oct 2007 at 10:37 pm #
Hi Matt, I’d like to say it was an amazingly cunning plan to draw Prattory into a situation where he would make a right tit of himself but sadly not, he doesn’t need my help to do that anyway. Simply a message to the particular person in question with what constitutes a friendly warning that I knew who they were and the only way to pinpoint them specifically was to drop their geographic location. Sheer coincidence that they happened to be in Prague.
Perhaps Bob’s comment puts it most into perspective, I’m sure Prague is a lovely place, would like to visit it one day myself but like all major cities I’m sure it has its fair share of nice genuine people and is also residence to some rather obnoxious ones too but simply to answer your question, no, not being mischievous, I can’t help that people might think the worst of Dominic, he’s only himself to blame for the reputation he’s built up on-line.
BTW, apologies for the long delay in clearing your comment. I’m trying to work out why it went to moderation at all. I’ll have to check but I remember back when I first started blogging I was getting rather a lot of spam related to, shall we say female services in Prague and I may have dropped that into the filter, will have to check. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m in the mood for a mischievous post in relation to another comment I have held in moderation by someone accusing me of being a leftie who won’t publish their comment because I don’t want to hear what they’ve got to say. BTW, missed the show on Friday, apologies – been hellishly busy.
